Anti-Social Behaviour Measures (ASBOs)

A number of measures to address anti-social behaviour by children were introduced in March 2007. They offer an alternative way of dealing with a child who acts in an anti-social way other than going through the criminal process. The anti-social measures for children are different to those designed for adults.

The key features of these measures for children are:

• There are a series of stages before an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) can be sought, including a warning, a good behaviour contract and referral to the Garda Juvenile Diversion Programme.
• Involvement by parents is required, particularly in the case of a good behaviour contract.An application for an order can only be made by a Garda at a rank not below that of Superintendent.
• The safeguards of the Children Act 2001 will apply.
